MrBubbleBug
MrBubbleBug (aka CutePirateBabe) has a very unique style to her work, and I love it. MrBubbleBug has many inspirations from Tim Schafer to Tim Burton. And her artwork shows it. I chose MrBubbleBug to showcase today because in a world where people expect art to be realistic and proportionate, her work shows a more uniqueness to her work. Some of her work look like they came out of the game Psychonauts. Some of her work look like something that came out of dream. Regardless where here inspirations from her work cam from, they are very much impressive. I managed to get a couple of words from her and here's what she had to say:
SmirkyTrick: When did you start working on your specific medium?
I remember the first time I was really introduced to charcoal was third grade. We had to draw underwater life, and I drew an octopus. It was really fun, but became difficult once I realized how hard it is to correct mistakes. But I guess the challenge is what makes it so great!
SmirkyTrick: What sparked your interest in this?
I'm not quite sure. I've been experimenting with different mediums for a while, trying to find what suits me the best. Pencils have been the easiest, but only because I've been using them forever. But It's hard to get darkness right, so It's always nice to have charcoal at hand.
SmirkyTrick: Is there anyone or anything that inspired your personal style?
Yes! When I was three I got very obsessed with Tim Burton's movies and style. It all started with the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is definitely not all that disturbing or creepy, but it managed to spark my interest in the darker things most little girls don't like.
SmirkyTrick: Which piece would you say you are the most proud of?
At the moment I'd have to say the piece I'm most proud of is my drawing of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman from the television series Sherlock. I spent up to seven hours drawing, when I should have been sleeping. Heheh

SmirkyTrick: Who is your favorite artist and why?
Gah, this one is tough... I really don't know. I think I'll have to go with Assistant-Number-One from deviantart. Her art is amazing, and I look up to her so much as a person and artist. Link
SmirkyTrick: What's your favorite video game?
This one is tough too. I grew up watching my mom play the original Tomb Raider, which I think is what really got me interested in gaming. I went on to the Sly Cooper trilogy, then Jak and Daxter... And it just went on in a never ending spiral of, "Mom buy me this game!" and "But I already finished that game, I need a new one!" But out of all the games I've played, I think Psychonauts is definitely the best. With it's creepy and incredibly unique plot line, I fell in love instantly.
SmirkyTrick: What's your favorite movie?
Any Tim Burton movie, honestly.
SmirkyTrick: What would you say to those who want to get into the same genre of art that you do?
1.) Smudge tools are your best friend
2.) You make a mistake? Make the mistake a piece of the work. Don't start over, or get upset that you've ruined your art, because you haven't! For all you know, that "Mistake" could be the best part of the picture.
3.) Practice at least once a day! You can't get anywhere without practice.
