The third title in the Uncharted saga. Nathan Drake a sassy fortune hunter in search for his ancestor’s, Sir Francis Drake, secrets. Accompanied by him are his old friends Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher, new member of the group is Cutter a British friend of Nathan who helped him get information on Ubar, the Atlantis of the sands. Nate and his crew must travel through the heart of Arabia to uncover Francis Drake’s secrets while racing against time.
Nathan Drake returns as the main protagonist and really is the heart of the uncharted games, his small witty dialogue and one liners while playing through the game really makes Uncharted what it is with its characters. Victor Sullivan, Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher all return. Victor is as bawdy as ever and really is set up as the father figure for Nathan. Throughout the story Victor serves as Nathan’s conscience while he’s (Nathan) obsessed with uncovering Francis’s secrets.
Chloe shows up at the beginning of the game helping out Victor and Nathan get out of trouble. She portrays a much more darker protagonist compared to Nathan, always willing to shoot first ask questions later. Throughout the story Nathan sends Chloe and Cutter to Syria to recover clues. While there, Cutter suffers an injury prompting Chloe to back out of the adventure to get Cutter medical help. While in Yemen, Nathan seeks help from Elena Fisher. Elena agrees to help them and there they continue their adventures.
The gameplay remains similar to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves while the game has a good mix of puzzle solving, platforming and gun play. Although the controls were a little bit sluggish and slippery this has since been patched. Gun play is pretty basic, you can aim down the sites for a more accurate shooting or simply hold down the R1 button and empty your clip from the hip hoping to hit something. Platforming is also pretty basic, the game shows you a pretty clear path on where to go. Some jumps can get a little finicky and can lead to a fall to the death.
The story this time goes a little bit deeper into Nathan’s personal life and his fears. While searching for Ubar the Atlantis of the Sands he has a rival treasure hunter also searching for it, Katherine Marlowe, only Nathan has an advantage of having Sir Francis’s ring which provides additional information on Nathan’s journey. The game takes you through London, Cartagena, France, Syria, Yemen and the Rub’ Al Khali desert, the game does a beautiful job of portraying these landscapes with pretty graphics, a big bonus for the Uncharted games for always looking pretty as all hell while telling you a fun and an engaging story.
The Multiplayer was alright, the new dynamic maps were pretty fun, the new buddy system was also pretty comfortable instead of having to spawn somewhere on the map you could spawn behind your buddy. Ability boosters returned which gave you things such as the ability to zoom in on weapons and see through walls. On February 2013 Naughty Dog made the multiplayer of Uncharted 3 free to play all the way up to level 15, players could still play though they would stop progressing in unlocks and ability boosters.
In my personal opinion the game felt like a small step backwards from Uncharted 2, the single player was shorter and the multiplayer wasn’t as engaging as the second one. Nevertheless the game is still very fun and entertaining and well worth whatever its price is right now. The pros definitively outweigh the cons with this game, if you have a PS3 and are looking for an engaging adventure game and multiplayer to kill time in Uncharted 3 is a good choice.
